Governor Bill Richardson Breaks Ground on I-25 GRIP Project from Tramway to Bernalillo

Interstate 25 is the main highway to Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Las Cruces, which are the most populated cities in New Mexico. This (GRIP) Governor Richardson’s Investment Partnership project – which will widen lanes in all directions of the I-25/Tramway Road Interchange – should improve access and safety on the highway. As Governor I have worked tirelessly to improve New Mexico’s infrastructure and transportation,” said Governor Bill Richardson. “This GRIP project is the first step in a three-lane I-25 all the way to Bernalillo. It will provide real relief for commuters.”

Completed in Spring 2006 and totaling in at $15.5. million, the Tramway Interchange at I-25 was built to support the traffic accessing the Interstate in all directions. Shoulders were widened, exit ramps were paved, stoplights were installed, and the Tramway Bridge was completed to accommodate local traffic passing daily underneath the Interstate.

Also upcoming is a six lane facility construction from the Tramway Interchange to Bernalillo at U.S. 550. GRIP supports this 3 lane interstate addition to accommodate traffic counts of nearly 65,000 per day.

In August 2009, crews with FNF Construction began work on the first phase of the project that spans from the Tramway Interchange up to N.M. 437 in Bernalillo. The construction consists of roadway reconstruction and widening, drainage structure extension, a concrete box culvert in Sandia Pueblo and a full replacement of the Sandia Wash Bridge. The $28.4 million project is expected to take approximately a year to complete.

Traffic & Detours

The project wil be phased so that two lanes northbound and two lanes southbound will be maintained at all times, with temporary lane closures kept to a minimum between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Speed will be reduced to 55 mph throughout the project limits.

Motorists are encouraged to use emergency turnouts that will be marked and maintained throughout the duration of the project.
